When the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in1945, my family was some 200 km away from ground zero and we were safe from the radiation fallout. When the Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear device in 1949 the U.S. and the communist nation plunged into a confrontation knowing that both sides had the capacity of destroy the other.
